Just for fun

During a recent trip to Las Vegas, we played a few games of Keno during some of our meals. The game itself pretty much sucks, but it makes a pretty good Excel application.

NOTE: This workbook requires Excel 97 or later.

Download

  • Download Keno for Excel (77K)
The file (keno.exe) is a self-extracting archive that contains keno.xls.  After downloading, execute keno.exe to extract the workbook. Then open keno.xls to begin the game. Even if you're not interested in Keno, you might find some of the techniques useful or interesting (nothing in the workbook is password-protected).

How to play

Each game consists of drawing 20 random numbers. Click 'Choose Numbers' and then click on from 1 to 10 "spots." The object of the game is to predict which numbers will be selected. Click 'Play!' to draw the numbers.

Payoffs are determined by the number of spots you pick, and the number of matching numbers that were drawn. The payoffs are typical of those paid in casinos. In other words, you're not likely to win.
